Curriculum

Welcome to the curriculum at Barrow Hill Junior School

Intent

At Barrow Hill Junior School we follow the National Curriculum in order that pupils gain specific subject knowledge and facts, and acquire skills across all areas of the primary curriculum. Our curriculum is also underpinned by education for global citizenship and our values of trust, fairness and respect. We believe that all our pupils are entitled to an education that equips them with the knowledge, skills and values they need to embrace the opportunities and challenges they encounter.  We value all children as individuals and believe in acknowledging and celebrating each and every one of our pupils’ unique approaches to learning.

We want our pupils to take informed risks and aspire to achieve their goals. Above all – we want our pupils to thrive in our challenging world and for them to be able to apply their skills and thinking to new situations and know they can make a difference.

Implementation

We teach subject specific knowledge in individually designated lessons so our pupils absorb and understand key facts.  However, it is also our aim to ensure skills and knowledge which is learned in one subject is transferred across all learning. This ethos links learning together ensuring it is not compartmentalised, but forms a rich curricular tapestry that is cohesive, ambitious and challenging, promoting a ‘growth mindset’ in all our pupils. Every subject is considered an important and integral part of our curriculum.

Our flexible teaching approaches, which encourages both independent and collaborative learning, discussion and dialogue, supports pupils in learning how to learn and accept and relish challenges, but above all teaches them to understand that mistakes are an important part of learning and eventual success.

Pupils are encouraged to use their learning powers of concentration, curiosity, co-operation, self-improvement and resilience in everything they do. These are skills and attributes which we strongly believe will empower them throughout their life-long learning journey.

Every class has its own Learning Lounge attached to the classroom. These additional spaces are well equipped with books and other learning resources where pupils can continue their learning and develop their own enquiry skills through researching interests that are important to them.

 Impact

Through careful progression mapping and planning, and effective formative and summative, assessment pupils’ attainment at the end of key Stage 2 are above national averages. Pupils talk with confidence about their learning and demonstrate enjoyment across the curriculum. Through extensive and tailored training, staff feel empowered and supported to deliver high quality learning opportunities and continue to develop their own subject areas in a mutually supportive environment.

During their time at Barrow Hill Junior School, our pupils demonstrate confidence, independence, resilience and a real thirst for learning. They form meaningful relationships based upon mutual respect and trust, recognising and celebrating difference, not only within the school community, but in the wider world as well, ensuring they are well equipped as they prepare to move onto secondary school.
